Annual Running Cost

Compare annual EV charging with petrol or diesel using your mileage and home/public charging mix.

The total distance you expect to drive in a year. Use an MOT history, odometer records or your insurance mileage estimate.
Average EV efficiency in miles per kWh across the year. Use your car’s long-term average if known; 3.5 is a sensible starting point.
The percentage of all charging energy you expect to buy at home. The remainder is automatically treated as public charging.
Your average home charging price in pence per kWh. Use the cheap overnight rate if nearly all home charging happens then; otherwise use a blended average.
The average public charger price you expect to pay, in pence per kWh—not one unusually cheap or expensive stop.
Electricity lost during home charging. Leave at 10% if unsure.
Electricity lost during public charging. Leave at 13% if unsure.
The real-world UK miles per imperial gallon of the petrol or diesel car being compared. Use its trip-computer average if available.
Fuel price in pence per litre. Enter 155 for £1.55 per litre.

Understanding annual EV charging costs

Your yearly electricity cost depends on mileage, real-world efficiency, charging losses and where you charge. Home charging is usually priced differently from public rapid charging, so the home/public split can materially change the result.

EV calculation

Annual miles are divided by miles per kWh to estimate battery energy. Home and public charging losses are then applied before each share is multiplied by its electricity rate.

Petrol or diesel comparison

The fuel comparison uses UK imperial MPG and pence per litre. For a fair result, use the fuel car’s real trip-computer average rather than its best official figure.
